Ayurvedic Home Remedies
On this page, you will see recommendations for foods that you can buy or make to create a Healthy Diet. Because of our natural constitutions and imbalances in life, we should adjust our diets to fit the needs of the present.
All foods have seasons and all seasons have foods.
You will see me use several terms that are commonly used in Ayurveda. The term Causative Factor, or Hetu in Sanskrit, is a term we use in evaluation and explanation. A Causative Factor is something that is causing your body to be imbalanced and possibly ill. Causative Factors cause symptoms to appear telling us that we are on the road to a possible illness if we don't do something about it.
Have you ever eaten Ice Cream and then, within minutes, hours or days had mucus in your throat or sinusitis. Well, guess what? The Ice Cream was a Causative Factor for that. It might not be the only Causative Factor, but it is one of them. The mucus may go away in minutes or hours, or it may linger and become something bigger. In Ayurveda, we treat Causative Factors by trying to take them out of your life, or at least help them not to affect your health.
You may read different view points from Allopathic Doctors on some things, but please understand that Ayurveda is a Science that was lost for a while, but now is coming to light, again. The goal of Ayurveda is to treat the person, not the symptom.
Ghee
Ghee, is an easy way to give oileation to the body. When the skin is dry, you can also assume that there is dryness on the inside of the body. We put lotions and oils on our skin, but do not think about our insides until other symptoms arise. Constipation as well as other symptoms can be signs of dryness in the body. Adding a teaspoon of ghee to your vegetables of even cooking with it instead of other oils is a safe and effective way to add the oil back to your internal body. When the body is showing signs of dryness in illness and disease, ghee is sometimes recommended as the substance to take your herbs with. Ghee is also a wonderful oil to cook with since it can be used at high temperatures. It adds a wonderful flavor to rice, vegetable and other food to enhance your culinary experiences.
Ghee Recipe
- 2 sticks of unsalted butter.
- Melt on medium to medium low, depending on your stove.
- When it start to bubble and pop, turn heat down.
- When popping begins to subside, turn heat off and let cool a bit.
- Filter fat out with cheese cloth or a chinoas (a strainer) and put ghee in glass jar.
Do not refrigerate. Ghee is better for you at room temperature or warmed. Remember that food is meant to be consumed in moderation.

Sinus Issues
Sinus Issues tend to be a problem year round in modern times. With the importing of non-indigenous vegetation and the changes in weather patterns, we have year round symptoms that are related to what Ayurveda calls, "Pinasa". As it continues, it develops into a Cold or the Flu.
Many over the counter Sinus and Cold remedies over dry the sinus passages causing other issues and usually leading to a longer duration of symptoms such as mucus and sinus drainage.
Ayurveda offers many things to help ward off the repeated sinus issues. A good defense is to apply a bit of warm coconut oil to the inside of the nose.
Nasal Abhyanga
400 ML of Coconut Oil
1/4 tsp of Camphor Oil.
Put 2 drops on finger and Apply to the inside of your Nose.
If you tend to have chronic sinus issues, it is a good idea to see a Practition for a consultation. Ayurveda believes that repeated or chronic conditions are issues with Digestive Fire or "Agni", and need to be dealt with through herbs and therapies.
